Imagine having your innocence stolen at an early age by someone you trust, or struggling financially before even knowing the meaning of the word “struggling”. Ebony Canion has had her share of tumultuous events, yet even she was stunned when a speeding car hit her intentionally, dragging her through the streets with her body folded underneath the vehicle. In a coma for nearly two months, Ebony had no idea her tongue and face had to be sewn back on, or the list of thirty other life-threatening injuries she had sustained. Ebony didn’t know she’d been “Left for Dead”. In this horrifying first-hand account of a survivor, Ms. Canion delivers a riveting story about overcoming tragedy throughout her childhood, and developing the will to live after numerous attacks on her life. Her unimaginable determination to walk, talk, and eat again will leave you spellbound and inspired. Her scars tell a story that must be heard and will have you never wanting to complain again.
We were brawling in the middle of the street. Punches and kicks were thrown in every direction. After a bunch of yelling and name calling, the girls headed back to their car. Both groups made threats, but only out of anger. The girls finally rushed back to their car. Seconds later, one of them threw a bottle from the car window, targeted at me. It missed, shattering in the street.
The moment that followed changed my life and will haunt my dreams until the day I die. It was at that moment that I realized why I had such a bad feeling about going out that night. It was the reason I did not feel right about leaving my four children at home. Things were over, and everyone had fought it out. I never expected what happened next.
The car engine revved. A second later, it sped out of the driveway, screeching and burning rubber. As it did, the driver purposely jerked the steering wheel in my direction, although she had plenty of room to go in any direction she wanted. As the headlights bore down on me, in a split second, I saw the many flashes of pain in my life: The day my father moved out, the man forcing me to do sexual things at a young age, the stench of the man who raped me in the bathroom at 14, the fists of the man I once loved crashing into my face, the knife intentionally forced into my mother’s chest, the day I became a widow with three children to feed…..
Each moment blazed by in blinding flashes, and the pain of each rushed past me. I guess it was a defense mechanism though, an act to instantly prepare me for the pain I was about to face. The car slammed into me. Immediately, the force made me crumple over the hood and my hands slammed down on its surface.
From that moment on, everything went dark for me. My sister recalls everything that happened next.
