Spiritual Wall Street

He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves….“Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”  Luke 10:2-3; 16

If you have ever had the opportunity to see the floor of the NYSE you know that it is an orchestrated chaos.  From the moment bell sounds, people are yelling across the floor while numbers slide across digital screens rising and falling.  Paper is flung like confetti and phone calls are being made.  People are giving of their time and money to keep an economy going and their pockets full.  It is an interesting song and dance during the business day that happens on this floor.  But when the final bell rings, it shuts down so quickly, like no one was ever there.  A silent hush falls over the floor while the final wisps of paper fall and the broom is pushed to ready for the next day.

Somehow I am reminded of the story of Mary and Martha (Luke 10: 38-42).  Martha opened her home to Jesus after he sent the seventy-two out.  Her sister Mary who was there with her watched the hustle and bustle in the home while Martha ran around the home, in her orchestrated chaos to ready for Jesus.  Mary, even in her excitement of seeing Jesus, sat quiet at his feet.  I am sure that she looked at him with complete amazement, heart racing in her quiet excitement, she listened all while chaos was going on around her.  When Martha noticed this, she wondered why Jesus would allow her sister to remain still and not be busy with welcome preparation.  (40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”) What Martha did not realize is that work was being done but not in the visual sense for others to praise, but in the hearing of God’s word as her sister Mary sat at his feet!  Martha was caught in the chaos, investing in visual praise while her sister invested in food for her spirit!

In this buys world of here and there and everywhere, take time to sit at throne.  Rest at the feet of Jesus and let the words of the Father ease you during your orchestrated chaos and when the final bell rings, you will know your time was invested well.
