Searching for Leftovers

John 6: 26-29

Jesus replied, “The truth is, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you saw the miraculous sign. But you shouldn’t be so concerned about perishable things like food.  Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that I, the Son of Man, can give you.  For God the Father has sent me for that very purpose.” They replied, “What does God want us to do?’ Jesus told them, “This is what God wants you to do:  Believe in the one he has sent.”

How many times have you stood in front of the fridge practically hoping for something good to jump out at that will satisfy your craving or your taste for something distinct, like ice cream or a good sandwich or a piece of fruit? Many times, no matter how we sit and stare at it nothing seems to look tasty or satisfying. We close the door and begin to search elsewhere for something to take care of the hunger.

This got me to thinking about when Jesus fed five thousand on no more than five loaves and two fish. This crowd followed Jesus wherever He went because of what they saw. Food was not a priority at the time of seeing the miracles and Jesus though it was nearing Passover.  As the disciples pondered where to get food, Jesus asked Phillip where can we buy bread to feed all these people? The test was to see where they would look to for sustenance.  (John 6: 5-8). Then it gets good….not only did the masses get fed but then there were leftovers, twelve baskets full! This showing that God not only gives you what you need but the supply will go beyond what you ask for (Psalm 37: 19 & Eph 3:20)

Now when all was said and done, Jesus knew that the people were only looking to him for food and not for what He was truly there for.  Many forget that He feeds and clothes the birds of the air, how much more shall He take care of us? (Mat 6:26) We have so much more in Him than just food for the moment.  Don’t go looking for leftovers.  Look to God for fresh food daily and immerse yourself in His word.

Little is much, when God is in it.  Labor not, for wealth of fame.  There’s a crown and you can win it,  If you go in Jesus Name!
