Why Support is a Necessity

I had the opportunity to take part in a discussion that talked about support and why it is necessary.  I felt today that I needed to expound on that discussion and bring you now only the views from that group but mine as well.

Most of what was spoken was about how you can put yourself wholeheartedly into what you believe only to have others pass by as if it doesn’t matter and how it hurts to watch the effect it has.  No one wants to sit back with the facade of support, especially when you are grinding away at what you believe in only to be forgotten five minutes later.  So ask yourself……

Do you truly support your local artists?  Business owners? Young entreprenuers?

“ARTISTS CAN’T SURVIVE WITH JUST A VIEW, OR THE PRESS OF A LIKE BUTTON.  NO ARTIST IS CONTENT WITH JUST A VAGUE STATEMENT LIKE “YOU WERE GREAT” OR “WHY HAVEN’T YOU MADE IT YET”. Evon Uniique, Manager

This is a powerful statement made by this manager of a local underground artist.  There is a true struggle out there to get songs played, heard, venues booked.  Social media is another story.  There is a constant vigil to stay on top and stay thriving.  When you can spend hundreds to go and watch a hyped celebrity who you will probably never meet but argue about spending a few bucks to see local talent you live right by…….doesn’t that make you scratch your  head.

This brings up the other point; is it the fault of the artist for not gathering that support?  “No, it is not always the artist”, says CEO of WMSKonlineradio Tia Hamilton.  “The venue, the promoter, the atmosphere and the people play a part as well,  They only seem to pop when they feel they are getting something from you” says Tia Hamilton.  What does this say about supporting each other?  Whether in music or any other industry support is important in order to flourish.  You need someone who is looking out over the industry (underground), but 99% just are not ready, says Tia Hamilton.  It is loud and clear what has been spoken by those known to me personally in the industry.  My thing is this, is that artist speaking to you on some level or are you just following in the hopes of finding a space on the so called gravy train? Music you can connect with and that has a message, that is what I like.  I may not be deep in the underground scene but I know it is real, thriving and when I can go and support, I will.

The power of the dollar bill is evident as it dictates who you follow and what you will do. When you have the power to play someone who has a following and you choose not to, what does that say about you?  The who you know versus what you know is a huge factor.  It is obvious we in Baltimore understand the problem, know what the problem is, so how do we solve it?

“IF WE KNOW WHAT THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEMS ARE THEN WHAT CAN WE DO TO SAVE AND PROMOTE OUR LOCAL ARTISTS, GET THEM ON MAJOR PLATFORMS….GET THEM EXPOSURE”? Evon Uniique, Manager

I believe artists that know the ins and outs of their industry and have their hand or ear on the heartbeat of the underground scene in their area truly benefit.  Knowing that is just part of it though.  Many are willing to play the music but can’t get some artists with a following to do what they need to do to get the music played. Some artists feel they are too good for their own area and expect what I call Diva treatment.  The exposure levels that some local artists could get if they just take simple measures to receive airplay.

“AT WWW.WMSKONLINERADIO.COM ALL WE DO IS PUT IT ON FOR THE INDIE BUT THEY HAVE ONE JOB AND THAT’S PRODUCE A COMPLETE EPK…THEY DON’T EVEN KNOW 3 LEVELS TO A TRACK HENCE WHY I WON’T PUT YOU ON IF YOU ARE NOT READY”.  Tia Hamilton, CEO WMSKonlineradio.com

Mainstream media conforms to what they believe the public wants.  Indie/underground movement allows you the freedom to be who you creatively are.  Support your local artists.  Not just in presence but in voice, purchase, comments and more.  Word of mouth is the greatest advertisement in use today.  Social media is only part of how big this industry can be.  Stop expecting the good good just because you know the artists.  It lasts longer when you actively make it a point to share and be active with more than just a single word or a button press.  Words to live by.

I end this blog to say this…….

I believe in what I am doing makes a difference, therefore, I will invest in myself!

I believe in you and your message and see you investing in you, I will invest in you!

I have those that believe in me so therefore, they invest in me to see me succeed!

Do you see what is happening? This is how you build yourself and support others as well.
